Whether you wear makeup every day or not, these tips and tricks will take your look from meh to marvellous! Desk to date, day to night, we’ve decoded the jargon and found the top tips and techniques that even a beauty novice will be able to master. And if you’re a makeup artist in the making? We might have a few that you will want to know too!
1. Wow Brows
When defining your brows - start with the B. Pro Long wear Eyebrow Pommade to create feathery strokes that almost mimic the way your hair would grow in the gaps and brush through to disperse the colour. A grey-taupe shade and cool brown tone suits pretty much every hair colour going and the only shades you need in your makeup bag. Use the darker shade towards the end of your eyebrows in slightly bolder strokes and create definition. Fix in place with a brow gel so they stay all day.
2. Eye Eye Matey
Tired? Us too. Why not pop a bit of white eyeshadow, such as the Gosh Eye Designer Eyeshadow in Stardust, or highlighter in the corner of your eye using a cotton bud to fake looking awake. White eyeliner on your waterline is also great for this! Using eyelash curlers before mascara will also open up the eye and eye area. They’re usually the first thing people look at when they meet you so make every second count.
3. Perfect Foundation
If you’re on the hunt for a new foundation, it’s really important to look in natural light for the colour you need. The jawline is the best place to test for the colour - and if you can, leave it for a few minutes before buying as some can oxidize and actually turn out to be a completely different colour.
4. Prep It Real Good
Having a clean, blank canvas before you apply your makeup is probably your most important step if you want your makeup to last throughout the day.
Even after you have showered, residue can remain on our skin so clean your face with a cotton pad and cleanser before applying your cream and the rest of your skincare routine. A primer will help fix your makeup in place and last longer than you do on a night out!
5. Blush Crush
Many of us have fallen victim to applying blusher in the wrong place on our face and looking a little 80s. Just apply to the apples of your cheeks - pull a smile right now and look in the mirror. You just want to apply it to that lovely plump or apple part of the cheek to look like you’ve been injected with life.
6. Powder Power
Choosing the right powder is as important as picking your new foundation - you want to match it to your skin colour as closely as you can. Lightly dust over your face where you tend to create or notice shine and avoid paining your whole face in it. Avoid any powder that has talc in as this can create a ‘flash back’ effect when posing for those all-important night out selfies!
7. In Between The Lines
Do you really want to nail how to do the perfect cat eye flick? You’ve probably been attempting it since you saw Alexa Chung on T4 in the morning or better yet, Adele in the Hello video.
Well, we find angling the pen or brush from the corner of our nose to the end of our lash line and make a little dot just before or in the socket - depending how you want your eye liner to look works best. Follow the liner as close to your lash line as possible. This will not only make your eyes look more dramatic but guide you for that straight line. Then where you left your dot, or mark, match it to your lash line and ta-dah! You should look ready to star in your own music video. Clean up any mistakes with a cotton bud lightly dipped in makeup remover.
8. Perfect Pout
Add a touch of highlighter to your cupids bow and at the centre of your bottom lip to make your lips appear fuller and have the appeal of instant volume without the painful injections.
If you love to wear a bold lip but they’re dry from the changing weather - prep is essential! Gently scrub your lips with an old toothbrush and a little Vaseline for a flawless base. Putting a little pressed powder on your lips before applying lipstick makes it last a lot longer too. Lining your lips with the same or similar colour will prevent it from bleeding out to your skin and hold the colour for longer too.
9. The High-Light
Highlighter can seriously transform how your face looks. Perfectly placed, you can open up the appearance of your eyes, define your face and even make your lips look bigger.
You should always apply it to the highest points of your face and where light bounces of naturally. Cheekbones, brow bone, nose and cupid’s bow are the best and our favourite places to apply it when heading out *out*. Rather than going OTT with a powder highlight, why not use a liquid highlight - you can even use it before your foundation for subtle sheen or pat over before powder.
10. You're a Clean Act
Creamy products like foundation and gel-liner can build-up in our makeup tools and sometimes be really hard to remove by using a brush cleaner alone. Put a few drops of the B. Makeup Brush Cleaner in a cup or your hand and swirl with warm water - this should do the trick!
Repeat the process until the water from the brush runs clear. Top tip: Face wash is also great for removing stubborn makeup coated brushes.
